How do I show sub collections on a collection page?

Show the child collections (sub collections, subcategories) of the collection being viewed with the Sub collections section on the collection page: order, collections count, grid, carousel, or bento layout, cards, and why the section does not show on some collections.

3 min read

The Sub collections section shows the sub collections of the collection a shopper is viewing, as cards. For example, on a "Clothing" page it can show "Women" and "Men", so shoppers can go one level deeper.

Add it to the collection page

  1. Open the builder and choose Collection page in the Pages tab.
  2. Pick a collection to preview. Picking a collection only changes the preview: your design applies to all collections at once.
  3. In the Sections tab, click Add new section and pick Sub collections from the Products group.
  4. Drag it where you want it, for example above the product grid, then click Publish.

It is only offered on the collection page, one per page.

Which sub collections show

The section always uses the collection being viewed. It shows its direct sub collections only (one level down), and only those that are published and not hidden. You create and nest collections in Collections, see How do I organize products into collections?

On a collection with no sub collections, the section does not show at all, so you can keep it on the page safely. In the builder preview it shows "This collection has no sub collections" instead, so you can still select it.

Settings

  • Source mode: the order of the cards. Custom order follows the order you set in Collections. You can also pick Newest, Oldest, Best selling, Top rated, Alphabetical, or Reverse alphabetical.
  • Lookback period: for Best selling and Top rated, counts All time or only recent orders or reviews (last 7 to 180 days).
  • Collections count: 4, 6, 8, or 12.
  • Layout: Grid, Carousel, or Bento (large and small cards mixed, a normal grid on phones).
  • Columns (not for Bento), Mobile columns, and Carousel on mobile.
  • Navigation icons and Icon background for carousels.
  • Section width, Color scheme, Gap, Padding, and a Custom CSS tab.

You can add up to 2 Text blocks, 1 Divider, and 1 Group for a title. The Collection card works like in the Collections section, see How do I change how product cards and collection cards look?

  • Sub collections section (this one): big cards with images, on the collection page.
  • Sub collections setting of the Collections section: small text links under each card, on the home page or the collections page.

Both follow the same order you set in Collections when Source mode is Custom order.

Good to know

  • The section does not show? The collection has no published, visible sub collections.
  • The product grid of the page is a different section. See Collection products section.
