How do I create a coupon code for my customers?

Create discount codes from Products, then Sales tools, then Coupons: a percentage, a fixed amount or free shipping, with a minimum order, usage limits, dates and markets. Turn on the Discount code field in your checkout form, or share a link that applies the code.

A coupon is a code, like SAVE10, that gives buyers a discount when they order. To open coupons, go to Products, click Sales tools, then Coupons. Staff members need the Coupons permission. Coupons carry a Beta pill, so they may still change.

Creating a coupon

Click Add new coupon, fill in the fields below, then click Create.

  • Activate (on by default): buyers in the chosen markets can use the code.
  • Code: what buyers type. Use letters, numbers, dashes or underscores. Capital and small letters are treated the same, so save10 works like SAVE10. Each code must be unique in your store.
  • Markets: the countries where the code works.
  • Discount type: Percentage (fill in Discount percentage), Fixed amount (fill in Discount amount, in the currency of each market) or Free shipping.
  • Minimum order: optional, the order amount needed for the code to work, in the currency of each market.
  • Total uses: optional, how many orders can use the code in total.
  • Uses per customer: optional, how many times one buyer can use it. It is counted by phone number.
  • Start date and End date: leave the start empty to start right away, and the end empty to keep the coupon running.

How the discount works

  • A percentage or fixed amount is taken off the products, not the shipping. A fixed amount never takes the products below zero.
  • Free shipping makes the shipping free and keeps the products at their price.
  • The discount is taken after any bundle or order bump saving.
  • Buyers see the discount in the order summary before they order.
  • Markets, minimum order, dates and usage limits are checked again when the order is placed. If the code no longer applies, the order goes through at the regular price.
  • Only placed orders use a use. Unfinished checkouts and test orders do not.

Showing the code field

The Discount code field is off by default. Open the builder, click the gear icon, open Checkout form, find Discount code and set its status to Enabled. The checkout form is set per market. The buyer types the code and clicks Apply, or Remove to take it off. If the order is below the minimum, the field says "This code works on orders of ... or more". See Checkout form fields.

Add ?coupon= and your code to any link of your store, for example https://example.com/?coupon=SAVE10. The code is applied when the buyer opens the link, and it stays applied while they keep browsing in the same tab. Use these links in your ads and messages. A code that no longer works is ignored without an error.

Exit offer

The Exit offer section shows a popup with a code when a visitor is about to leave. Add it in the builder and type your code in Coupon code. The code must already exist in Coupons, and the popup stays hidden until a code is set. Its button applies the code for the buyer.

The coupons list

The list shows the Code, Discount, Markets, Used and Status: Activated, Scheduled, Ended, Used up or Deactivated. Click a row to edit the coupon and click Save. To delete coupons, tick them and choose Delete coupons.
