How do I send a WhatsApp marketing campaign to past customers?

Use WhatsApp Connect marketing campaigns to send a bulk WhatsApp message to customers who ordered in a market and date range, with their name, a product photo and link, a launch time or schedule, and a delay between messages to avoid spam flags.

What a campaign does

A marketing campaign sends one WhatsApp message to many past customers from your connected number. You choose who gets it by market and order date. First connect your number, see How do I send WhatsApp order confirmations and let customers confirm by reply?

Creating a campaign

Open WhatsApp Connect, click Marketing campaigns, then Add new marketing campaign.

  • Campaign name: a label for you.
  • Market: the market whose customers get the message. Pick one. The market must already have orders.
  • Maximum recipients: the most people to message. Leave it empty to message everyone who matches.
  • Orders range date: only customers who ordered between these dates are included. Both dates must be in the past.
  • Launch time: Now to start right away, or Scheduled to pick a Scheduled date within the next 7 days.
  • Timeout: the wait between two messages, in seconds, set with a slider. A longer wait (3 minutes or more) lowers the risk of WhatsApp flagging your number as spam.
  • Product: optional. Link a product to use its name and link in the message. The message is then sent with the product's photo.
  • Message: your text.

Message tags

  • Customer name {customer_fullname}: required. The message will not save without it. A personal name makes each message unique, which helps avoid spam flags.
  • Product name {product_name}: the linked product's name.
  • Product link {product_link}: a link to the linked product on your store.

Any other link in your message must use a domain connected to your store. A message with an unknown domain is rejected. See How do I connect a custom domain and verify DNS?

Who receives it

Customers are taken from real orders in the chosen market and dates, oldest first. Abandoned, duplicated, and deleted orders are skipped, and each phone number gets the message once. If you set Maximum recipients, only that many are messaged. Only numbers that are on WhatsApp receive it.

Campaign statuses

The Campaigns list shows each campaign's Name, Market, Maximum recipients, and Status: Created, Scheduled (with its date), In progress, Paused, Completed, or Canceled. Select campaigns and use Delete campaigns to remove them.

Tips

  • Start small. Test with a low Maximum recipients before a big send.
  • Pace it. Many fast messages can get your number blocked by WhatsApp. Use a long Timeout.
  • Stay connected while a campaign runs. If your number disconnects, sending stops until you reconnect.
  • If creating a campaign fails with a general error, check that your number is still connected in the app.
