ChatGPT pixel and Conversions API: how do I track my ChatGPT ads?

Set up the ChatGPT browser pixel and the ChatGPT API conversion app (OpenAI Conversions API): find your Pixel ID and API key in the conversions tab of OpenAI Ads Manager, and see which events reach ChatGPT ads.

What these apps do

  • ChatGPT browser pixel: adds the OpenAI pixel to your store, so ChatGPT ads sees what shoppers do in their browser after they tap your ad.
  • ChatGPT API conversion: sends your orders to ChatGPT ads from Storeep's servers through the OpenAI Conversions API.

Use both with the same pixel. How they work together is explained in What is the server-side Conversion API (CAPI) and why use it?

ChatGPT ads are new and only open in some countries, so check in OpenAI Ads Manager that you can run ads where you sell.

Before you start

  • An OpenAI Ads Manager account.
  • A pixel created in the conversions tab of Ads Manager. Copy its Pixel ID.
  • For the API conversion app, a Conversions API key, which you create in the same conversions tab.

Set up the ChatGPT browser pixel

  1. Open Apps, find ChatGPT browser pixel, and click Install.
  2. Open the app and click Add new pixel.
  3. Keep Activate on, type a Pixel name, and paste your Pixel ID.
  4. Pick your Markets and click Add.

There is no conversion event to choose: ChatGPT ads has one order event, order_created. The shared fields are explained in How do browser pixels work in Storeep?

Set up the ChatGPT API conversion

  1. Install ChatGPT API conversion from Apps, open it, and click Add new pixel.
  2. Keep Activate on. Turn on Abandoned orders only if you want recovered abandoned orders sent too.
  3. Type a Pixel name and paste the same Pixel ID as your browser pixel.
  4. Pick the same Markets, paste your key into API key, and click Add.

What ChatGPT ads receives

  • From the browser: page_viewed on every page, contents_viewed on product and collection pages, items_added, checkout_started, lead_created when someone sends your contact form, and order_created on the thank-you page.
  • From the server: order_created for each order and a contents_viewed for the first product, collection, or landing page a visitor opens.
  • Order events include the amount, currency, products, and the buyer's email, phone and name in hashed form. The ChatGPT click reference is sent too when the visitor came from an ad.
  • Orders with a total of zero are not sent.

Avoid double counting

Storeep gives the browser and server copies of each event the same event ID, so ChatGPT ads counts it once. This only works when both apps use the same Pixel ID.

Check your setup

  1. Open your store from a ChatGPT ad, or visit a few pages and place a test order.
  2. In the conversions tab of OpenAI Ads Manager, check that the events show on your pixel.

Common problems

  • "The pixel id you have entered is incorrect": paste only the Pixel ID, not the pixel code.
  • "The API key you have entered is incorrect": copy the whole key again, with no spaces before or after it.
  • Server events stopped: your API key was deleted or replaced. Create a new one and edit the entry.
