How do I customize my 404 (page not found) page?

Customize the 404 page shoppers see when a link does not exist: the 404 section, its text, buttons, dividers and groups, the default Return to Homepage button, width, colors, and padding.

3 min read

The 404 page is shown when someone opens an address that does not exist on your store, for example an old link to a deleted product or a typing mistake. Its main section, also called 404, holds your "page not found" message. It is required on this page.

Where to find it

Open the builder, choose 404 page in the Pages tab, and click the 404 section. Each market has its own 404 page, so write it in each market's language.

What it shows by default

A new 404 section has a group with a large "404", a "Page Not Found" heading, and a short sorry message, then a Return to Homepage button that links to your home page. Change any of these words to match your brand.

Blocks

The section holds up to 7 blocks:

  • Text (up to 3): headings and messages.
  • Button (up to 2): links to useful places, such as your home page, your best collection, or the search page.
  • Divider (up to 2).
  • Group (up to 2): arranges text, buttons, and dividers, for example two buttons side by side.

Settings for each block are in Group, Text, Button, and Divider blocks: how do the layout component settings work?

Section settings

  • Section width: Page or Full.
  • Color scheme: the colors of the section.
  • Padding: a new 404 section has more space above and below than most sections, so the message sits in the middle of the screen.
  • Custom CSS.

You can also add sections allowed on every page around it, such as Text, Image, or Newsletter. The header and footer help lost visitors find their way.

Change the button

  1. Click the Return to Homepage button in the preview, or pick it in the Sections tab.
  2. Change its Label, for example "Shop our best sellers".
  3. Keep Link type on URL and type the address in Link.
  4. Click Publish. To check it, open a wrong address on your live store, such as https://example.com/test-404.

Ideas for a better 404 page

  • Say what happened in plain words: the page was moved or no longer exists.
  • Give one clear next step, like a button to the home page, and a second one to a popular collection.
  • Keep your header so shoppers can use the menu and search.
  • For two buttons side by side, put them in a Group set to Horizontal and turn on Stack vertically on mobile.
