TikTok pixel and Events API: how do I track my TikTok ads?

Set up the TikTok browser pixel and the TikTok API conversion app (TikTok Events API): find your Pixel ID and access token in TikTok Events Manager, choose Lead or Purchase, and test with a test event code.

What these apps do

  • TikTok browser pixel: adds the TikTok Pixel to your store, so TikTok sees what shoppers do in their browser.
  • TikTok API conversion: sends your orders to TikTok from Storeep's servers through the TikTok Events API, so ad blockers and browser limits do not hide them.

Use both with the same pixel. How they work together is explained in What is the server-side Conversion API (CAPI) and why use it?

Before you start

  • A TikTok Ads Manager account (or TikTok Business Center).
  • A pixel in TikTok Events Manager (in Ads Manager, under Tools, Events, Web events). Its Pixel ID is a code of capital letters and numbers shown under the pixel name.
  • For the API conversion app, an access token. Open your pixel in Events Manager, go to Settings, and generate an access token in the Events API section.

Set up the TikTok browser pixel

  1. Open Apps, find TikTok browser pixel, and click Install.
  2. Open the app and click Add new pixel.
  3. Keep Activate on, type a Pixel name, and paste your Pixel ID.
  4. Pick your Markets and the Conversion event type (see below).
  5. Click Add.

The shared fields are explained in How do browser pixels work in Storeep?

Conversion event types

  • Lead (default): good for cash on delivery stores that optimize for leads.
  • Purchase: a completed purchase.

Pick the event your TikTok campaign optimizes for, and use the same one in both apps.

Set up the TikTok API conversion

  1. Install TikTok API conversion from Apps, open it, and click Add new pixel.
  2. Keep Activate on. Turn on Abandoned orders only if you want recovered abandoned orders sent too.
  3. Type a Pixel name and paste the same Pixel ID as your browser pixel.
  4. Pick the same Markets and Conversion event type.
  5. Paste your token into TikTok access token.
  6. Leave Activate test mode off for now, and click Add.

What TikTok receives

  • From the browser: a page view, ViewContent, AddToCart, Search, InitiateCheckout, a Lead when someone sends your contact form, and your conversion event on the thank-you page.
  • Every pixel you add gets the shopping events, whatever its conversion event type. This helps TikTok learn the full path to a sale.
  • From the server: your conversion event for each order and a ViewContent for the first product, collection, or landing page a visitor opens.
  • Order events include the value, currency, products, and the buyer's email and phone in hashed form. The TikTok click ID (ttclid) is sent too when the visitor came from an ad.

Avoid double counting

Storeep gives the browser and server copies of each event the same event ID, so TikTok counts it once. This only works when both apps use the same Pixel ID and the same event type.

Test your setup

  1. In TikTok Events Manager, open your pixel and go to Test events. Copy the test event code.
  2. Edit your entry in the TikTok API conversion app, turn on Activate test mode, paste the code into Test code, and click Save.
  3. Place a test order. The server event shows in the test events view.
  4. Turn test mode off when you are done.

For the browser pixel, the TikTok Pixel Helper extension for Chrome shows which events fire.

Common problems

  • "The pixel id you have entered is incorrect": paste only the Pixel ID, not the pixel code or your advertiser ID.
  • "The test code you have entered is incorrect": the code must start with TEST. Copy it again from Events Manager.
  • Server events stopped: your access token was removed. Generate a new one and edit the entry.
  • To verify your domain with TikTok, use the Domain Verifier app.
