What the PayPal app does
The PayPal app adds PayPal to your checkout. The buyer pays on PayPal's own secure page with their PayPal balance or a card saved in PayPal. The money goes to your PayPal account.
Before you start
- A PayPal account that can receive payments.
- PayPal payments from your store are always charged in US dollars, converted from the buyer's market currency. If your PayPal account holds another currency, check in PayPal how it handles US dollar payments.
You do not need to copy a Client ID or secret. You connect by logging in to PayPal.
Install and connect
- Open Apps, find PayPal in the Payment gateways tab and click Install on its card.
- Click Add new PayPal account. PayPal opens. Log in and approve the connection.
- You come back to Storeep automatically. The account shows in the PayPal accounts table by its email, with the tag Current in use.
- Turn on Activate and click Save.
If you click Save before connecting an account, you see a message asking you to link your first PayPal account.
Settings
- Activate: shows PayPal at checkout. Turn it off to hide it without losing your accounts.
- Method, Account, Number of use and Amount: choose which connected PayPal account takes each payment. See sharing payments across several accounts.
What buyers see
At checkout, buyers see PayPal with the PayPal logo, and the PayPal logo also joins your store's payment icons. After paying, the buyer comes back to your thank you page and the order becomes Done with the tag Paid with PayPal. How orders are confirmed is explained in How do online card payments work?
Test it
PayPal always takes real payments here, there is no sandbox mode. Place a small order on your live store with a different PayPal account than the one you connected, check that it arrives as Done and paid, then refund it from your PayPal account.
Common problems
- PayPal does not show at checkout. Check that Activate is on, that an account is connected, and that the checkout form's payment field is turned on. See payment methods.
- Buyers see "If you are the account owner, please try reconnecting your PayPal account." PayPal refused to start the payment. You also get an email titled Payment gateway error: PayPal with PayPal's reason. Check your PayPal account for limits or pending steps, then click Add new PayPal account and log in to the same account again to refresh the connection.
- The amount on PayPal is different from my store price. PayPal charges in US dollars, so the amount is converted from your market's currency.
- A buyer paid but the order is still Abandoned. The buyer probably closed the page before coming back. Find the payment in PayPal, then set the order to Done.
- Connecting a second account replaced the first. Use a different browser for each PayPal login.
