What the Stripe app does
The Stripe app lets buyers pay by credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, American Express and more) on Stripe's secure checkout page. It suits stores that sell to card holders in most countries. The money goes to your own Stripe account, and Stripe pays it out to your bank.
Before you start
- A Stripe account that is activated for live payments. You can also create one during the connection.
- For Apple Pay or Google Pay, turn them on in your Stripe Dashboard, in the payment methods settings.
You do not need to copy any API key. You connect by logging in to Stripe.
Install and connect
- Open Apps, find Stripe in the Payment gateways tab and click Install on its card.
- Click Add new Stripe account. Stripe opens. Log in (or sign up) and approve the connection.
- You come back to Storeep automatically. The account shows in the Stripe accounts table with its name, email and the tag Current in use.
- Turn on Activate and click Save.
If you click Save before connecting an account, you see "No account connected yet. Please link your first Stripe account to get started".
Settings
- Activate: shows Stripe at checkout. Turn it off to hide Stripe without losing your accounts.
- Apple Pay: adds the Apple Pay icon to your store's payment icons. Buyers on Apple devices can then pay with Apple Pay on Stripe's page, as long as Apple Pay is on in your Stripe account.
- Google Pay: the same for Google Pay on Android devices.
- Method, Account, Number of use and Amount: choose which connected account takes each payment. See sharing payments across several accounts.
What buyers see
At checkout, Stripe shows as Credit card, with the Visa, Mastercard, Maestro and American Express logos. The buyer places the order, pays on Stripe's page, and comes back to your thank you page. Stripe charges in the currency of the buyer's market when it supports it, and in US dollars otherwise.
The order then becomes Done with the tag Paid with Stripe. How orders are confirmed is explained in How do online card payments work?
Test it
Stripe always takes real payments here, there is no test mode. Place a small order on your live store with your own card, check that it arrives as Done and paid, then refund it from your Stripe Dashboard.
Common problems
- Stripe (Credit card) does not show at checkout. Check that Activate is on, that at least one account is connected, and that the checkout form's payment field is turned on. See payment methods.
- Buyers see "If you are the account owner, please try reconnecting your Stripe account." Stripe refused to open the payment page. You also get an email titled Payment gateway error: Stripe with Stripe's reason. Usually the account is not fully activated, was restricted, or the connection was removed in Stripe. Fix it in your Stripe Dashboard, then click Add new Stripe account and log in to the same account again. This refreshes the existing account instead of adding a new one.
- Apple Pay or Google Pay does not appear on Stripe's page. Turn it on in your Stripe Dashboard. The toggles in Storeep only add the icons to your store.
- A buyer paid but the order is still Abandoned. The buyer probably closed the page before coming back. Find the payment in Stripe, then set the order to Done.
- Connecting a second account replaced the first. Use a different browser for each Stripe login.
