What the app does
The Google Ads conversions app tells Google Ads which ad clicks turn into orders, so your campaigns and Smart Bidding learn what works. It loads the Google tag (gtag.js) on your store and sends a purchase conversion from the thank-you page after each order, with the order value, currency, and products.
It uses enhanced conversions: the buyer's email and phone are sent in protected (hashed) form so Google can match more sales to ad clicks.
It also sends page view, add to cart, search, begin checkout, and a lead event for contact form messages. These are for reporting only. Only the order is counted as your conversion.
Before you start
In Google Ads, go to Goals, then Conversions, and create a Website purchase conversion action. When Google shows the setup options, choose to set up the tag yourself (Google tag). You will see a Conversion ID like AW-123456789 and a Conversion label like aA0aA0aA0aA0aA0aA0aA. Copy both.
Installing and adding a tag
- Open Apps, find Google Ads conversions, and click Install.
- Open the app and click Add new tag.
- Fill in the fields below and click Add.
- Activate: when on, the tag receives your conversions. On by default.
- Tag name: a label for you only.
- Google tag ID: your conversion ID, in the form AW-00000000000.
- Google tag label: your conversion label, the letters and numbers after the slash in Google's
send_tovalue.
You can add several tags, for example one per Google Ads account. Every active tag gets each order.
Things to know
- There is no Markets field. An active tag receives orders from every market of your store.
- There is no server-side version for Google Ads. Ad blockers can stop some conversions from being reported.
- Google can take a few hours to show new conversions in Google Ads.
- The list shows Tag name, Tag ID, Tag Label, and Status. Click a row to edit it, or select rows and use Delete tags.
- Do not also add the same Google Ads conversion through Google Tag Manager, or each sale is counted twice.
Common problems
- "The tag ID you have entered is incorrect": the ID must look like AW- followed by numbers. Do not paste the whole code snippet.
- "The tag label you have entered is incorrect": paste only the label, without the ID or the slash.
- "The tag ID you have entered already exists": this ID is already added. Edit the existing tag instead.
