What these apps do
- Pinterest browser pixel: adds the Pinterest Tag to your store, so Pinterest sees what shoppers do in their browser.
- Pinterest API conversion: sends your orders to Pinterest from Storeep's servers through the Pinterest Conversions API.
Use both. How they work together is explained in What is the server-side Conversion API (CAPI) and why use it?
Before you start
- A Pinterest business account with access to Pinterest Ads Manager.
- A Pinterest Tag. In Ads Manager, open Conversions (under Ads) to find your Tag ID, a long number.
- For the API conversion app: your ad account ID (the number of your Pinterest ad account, shown in Ads Manager) and a conversion access token, which you generate in the Conversions section of Ads Manager.
Set up the Pinterest browser pixel
- Open Apps, find Pinterest browser pixel, and click Install.
- Open the app and click Add new pixel.
- Keep Activate on, type a Pixel name, and paste your Tag ID.
- Pick your Markets and the Conversion event type: Lead (default) or Purchase. Purchase is sent to Pinterest as a checkout event.
- Click Add.
The shared fields are explained in How do browser pixels work in Storeep?
Set up the Pinterest API conversion
- Install Pinterest API conversion from Apps, open it, and click Add new pixel.
- Keep Activate on. Turn on Abandoned orders only if you want recovered abandoned orders sent too.
- Type a Pixel name and paste your Ad account ID. This app asks for the ad account, not the Tag ID.
- Pick the same Markets and Conversion event type as your browser pixel.
- Paste your token into Pinterest access token and click Add.
The list in this app shows Ad account instead of Pixel ID. Each ad account can be added once.
What Pinterest receives
- From the browser: a page view, pagevisit when a shopper opens a product or collection, addtocart, search, a lead when someone sends your contact form, and your conversion event on the thank-you page.
- From the server: your conversion event for each order and a pagevisit for the first product, collection, or landing page a visitor opens.
- Order events include the value, currency, and products. Server order events also include the buyer's email and phone in hashed form.
The Pinterest tag does not get a checkout started event. Pinterest's checkout event is only sent for completed orders, when you pick Purchase.
Avoid double counting
Storeep gives the browser and server copies of each event the same event ID, so Pinterest can count it once. Use the same event type in both apps.
Test your setup
The Pinterest apps have no test mode in Storeep. To check the setup, place a real test order, then look for the events in the Conversions section of Pinterest Ads Manager. The Pinterest Tag Helper extension for Chrome shows which browser events fire. Cancel the test order afterwards.
Common problems
- "The tag id you have entered is incorrect": the Tag ID is numbers only. Do not paste the tag code.
- "The ad account id you have entered is incorrect": the ad account ID is numbers only.
- Server events stopped: your conversion access token was removed. Generate a new one and edit the entry.
